Nigeria and other countries of the world have been threatened by the Taliban with the imposition of Islamic law within their territories. The Islamic terrorist group that recently took over Afghanistan made the declaration during an interview with CNN. There is reason for Nigeria to take this threat very seriously considering its third position on the global terrorism index behind only the fallen country of Afghanistan and Iraq.

The Talibans having overpowered civil authority in Afghanistan declared their intention to enforce Islamic law across the world. This announcement was made by its leader Muhammed Afri Mustafa, one of the commanders of the Taliban during an interview with CNN. Muhammed Afri Mustafa spoke right inside a United States base which was abandoned by Afghanistan forces after they ran out of food, leaving weapons and ammunitions.

Muhammed Afri Mustafa recalled how the Taliban fought the United States troops over the years despite more sophisticated assets and equipment.

According to his words; “Many times we attacked this base when the Americans were here. We did operations; we were using Improvised Explosive Devices. The Americans had their helicopters, weapons and tanks on the ground. But we, Mujahideen, resisted very well.

“It is our belief that, one day, Mujahideen will have victory. Islamic law will come to not just Afghanistan, but all over the world. We are not in a hurry, we believe it will come one day. Jihad will not end until the last day”, Muhammed Afri Mustafa vowed.

Mawlavey Kamil, Taliban newly appointed Governor in Afghanistan boasted that the fundamentalist group, which controlled most of Afghanistan in the late 1990s is stronger.

According to his words; “The Taliban of 2001 was new. This Taliban is experienced and disciplined. Our activities are going well, we are obeying our leaders,” he said.

There are concerns about the rights of women. As fighters took territories from government forces in July, they entered Azizi Bank in Kandahar and ordered women out. The Jihadists led the bankers home and warned them not to return to their jobs. They, however, approved their replacement with male relatives.

“Islam has given rights to everyone equally. Women have their own rights. How much rights Islam has given to women, we will give them that much”, Mawlavey Kamil stated.

The Taliban seized power two weeks before America’s final troop withdrawal. In 2020, former President Donald Trump pulled out thousands from Afghanistan and Iraq.

President Joe Biden put the blame of the fall of Kabul on the nationals. According to his words; “It is wrong to order American troops to step up when Afghanistan’s own armed forces would not,” he said.

Since 2001, the United States has spent more than $2 trillion on the war. Thousands of Afghanistan are trying to leave but only hundreds have made it out yet.

Meanwhile, a former Nigerian Aviation Minister, Femi Fani-Kayode has warned that what is happening in Afghanistan may happen in Nigeria, since Boko Haram have not been defeated by Nigerian soldiers.

Fani-Kayode explained that terrorism will take over if Nigerians fail to stop fighting themselves and unite against insurgency. Making his voice heard in a tweet, the former minister of Aviation cautioned Nigerians to stop acting as if they do not have a common problem.

According to his words on Twitter and I read; “What happened in Afghanistan will eventually happen in Nigeria if we don’t stop fighting one another, kidding ourselves and acting as if we do not have a major terrorist and insurgency problem here in Nigeria.

“Afghanistan is Number 1 on the World Terror Index and Nigeria is Number 2. What does this tell you?

“Joe Biden, American President scampers like a rain-soaked, headless chicken and ordered American troops out of Afghanistan.

“China is set to recognize the Taliban Government in Afghanistan.

“Taliban terrorist leader Zabihullah Majahid is on Twitter and Donald Trump is banned. Isaiah 5:20-21 comes to mind.”

Also, Kingsley Moghalu, a former presidential candidate of the Young Progressive Party (YPP) also sent out a warning, but this warning was directed at President Muhammadu Buhari, telling him not to recognize the Taliban government in Afghanistan.

Kingsley Moghalu, however, urged the Nigerian government to learn from Afghanistan and stop cuddling repentant Boko Haram and ISWAP members.

In a series of tweets, the former Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) said Nigeria must learn that religious fundamentalism is dangerous and ends in terrorism.

According to his words on twitter and I read; “Recent events in Afghanistan, where the fundamentalist and terrorism-incubating Taliban has taken over the country, carries important lessons for Nigeria. Religious fundamentalism is dangerous and tends to verge into terrorism as we see with Boko Haram and ISWAP.

“We must stop cuddling with so-called repentant Boko Haram. Which serious country absorbs erstwhile terrorists into its armed forces? Nigeria government and its President Muhammadu Buhari must never recognize or deal with the Taliban.

We can never be a theocracy. What has happened in Afghanistan is possible only because of its monolithic religious makeup. The Government of a multi-religious country that is constitutionally a secular state must never tolerate some of its members harboring and expressing sympathy for globally recognized terrorist groups, while political dissenters are very quickly branded terrorists.

The other lesson from this is that the destiny of any country will ultimately be decided by its own people. Clearly, many Afghanistan’s are quite comfortable with the Taliban, while a minority is opposed to them.

American intervention in 2004 that dislodged them from power was clearly unpopular with the locals, and Washington has decided to leave the Afghanistan to their fate. If Nigeria breaks down into civil war and violence, no one is coming here to save anyone. We will all suffer the consequences,” he stated.
